No - access to data from COMPADRE and COMADRE is open to all without the need for a proposal. However, see our data access agreement here.
No – Data is fully open access. However, users are encouraged to register to remained informed on future versions, releases, workshops, potential typos and other opportunities
Your credentials are stored in our user database. Passwords are encrypted by using a hash algorithm. All personal information will only be used within the COMADRE and COMPADRE for communication purposes.
Our main goal is to provide matrix population models, and the metadata pertaining to them. These metadata are, as a rule, only included if they are necessary to interpret the matrices correctly. Therefore we routinely include geographical location information and time of data collection. Other variables, which admittedly may be interesting, are not included since they will take resources away from our core mission. Other databases already available or developed by interested users in the future may, down the road, interact with COMPADRE and COMADRE.
COMPADRE and COMADRE are open-access databases. We have no knowledge of what kinds of research are being carried out with them. As with any other area of science, it is up to the user to decide when, how, and with whom you share the details of your ongoing research. We welcome PDF copies of publications that make use of the databases to highlight in the portal; send us your publications at firstname.lastname@example.org to see them updated in the list of publications that have used COMPADRE/COMADRE.
Please contact us here with “Typo” in the subject line to let us know, so we can correct the problem. Typos (either accidentally introduced by us or from the source) will be tracked in the variable “Observations” for each matrix, individually, between various versions. The release of a fixed matrix or other piece of information will coincide with our periodic version release (below).

We also encourage users to cite the pertinent works introducing the respective database (Salguero-Gómez et al. Journal of Ecology 2015; Salguero-Gómez et al. bioRxiv 2015), as provided in the zip file of the data download. However, we also suggest that the users give full credit to all sources used by accessing the DOI of manuscritps and ISBN of books from which data were digitized by us, and subsequently analyzed by the user. This information can be accessed in the online appendixes of each introductory publication, as well as by running the data object through our R scripts (https://github.com/jonesor/compadreDB).
If you come across matrices that are not in COMPADRE or COMADRE (either in the current releases or in our “what’s in Store” site), please send the PDF/ancillary files with an explanatory note to email@example.com.

This information can be found in the Matrix Description file in the downloads area of this site. We provide DOI and ISBN when available to us. Due to copyright limitations, we are unable to provide the actual publications from which data were acquired.
We will update the databases approximately every six months. We will inform users on our email list about this (for which users must have registered, and will also make announcements on our Twitter @compadreDB and @comadreDB, facebook page and blog blog feeds.
Current and past funding sources can be found here. COMPADRE and COMADRE are provided as a community resource with no funding for individual projects.
The files made available in COMPADRE and COMADRE are subsettable and analyzable through a number of basic programs and programming languages (e.g. R, MatLab, python, C++, etc). In our github page, we have developed scripts to arrange the data according to their needs. Users are welcome to develop further routines (we encourage open-access languages and packages) and request push updates. An R package is currently under development to access and interact with a more advanced version of the database online. This is schedule for release in late 2016. In addition, we routinely run workshops on comparative demography using COMPADRE and COMADRE. We are currently working on the development of searching, browsing and SQL menus that will allow users to find and retrieve demographic information by various conditional searches (e.g. plant growth type, taxonomic class, study duration, matrix dimension, country, GPS coordinates, etc). In addition, we are also developing an R package to derive numerous demographic quantities from these matrices and to integrate the analyses with phylogenetic corrections.
